Margaret McKenney Dupree

President

Born in Belvedere South Carolina, Margaret McKenney Dupree was raised in North Philadelphia. She became a charter member of Childs Memorial Baptist Church where she remains active today.

Having completed the 12th grade at Girls High, Margaret attended Apex College obtaining her Beauticians license and worked at her mother’s beauty shop in North Philadelphia. Then, following her dream, she was accepted and completed the funeral service program at Eckels College of Mortuary Science and received her funeral director’s license in 1949.

In 1951, she married Troy E. Dupree, Sr. and co-founded an independent funeral home in 1955, at 2809 W. Diamond Street. The two were blessed with four children, Melanie, Carrie Grace, Troy Jr and Kenneth. For many years, Ms. Dupree juggled the raising of four children and supporting her Mother’s enterprises as well as the funeral home.

After experiencing empty nest syndrome, Mrs. Dupree obtained employment with the Philadelphia School District and found great satisfaction in her role as a classroom aide specializing in reading and math.

In 1987, Mrs. Dupree retired from the School District and within a few months, mourned the passing of her husband of 35 years. From there, Mrs. Dupree picked up the mantle with her youngest son, Kenneth to keep the business open where they continue to provide compassionate services to the Philadelphia community.
